Still, I can't think of a good "giant mechs" movie that's been made. That wasn't Japanese anime, anyway. Will have to see it just for that reason (on DVD). Although I sort of imagine it will be like slow motion Iron Man. The basic plot seems a little "Battle: Los Angeles" though.
This trailer for Superman looks better than the last one. I just wish they'd commit to a Superman storyline and stop resetting to his childhood. I'm already sick of "Superman growing up" stories. I thought Smallville pretty well had that covered.

I loved the first two Superman movies, although I'm sure being a kid at the time was a factor. I watched Superman 2 again with my two older girls recently, and it was definitely more cheesy than I remembered. But still, for the time they were really good. Superman 3 was bad, though, and Superman 4 was a train wreck (hmm, same pattern as the first 4 Batman movies, now that I think about it...)
When you think about, most comic book/sci-fi franchises seem to follow the same pattern. First movie good, second movie great, third movie meh, four movie dire. Superman, first set of Batman movies, Alien, Spiderman (except there was no 4th), X-Men (counting Wolverine as the 4th), Star Wars (counting Phantom Menace as the 4th)...it's almost like a curse...

That's why I have a guideline about anything that's got numbers after it. Usually the higher the number the worst it is.
So far I think The Hobbit series is about the only thing I'll watch. Superman is my very least favorite hero and at this point Hollywood is whoring the comic book theme to make $$$. Some are good but it gets excessive to make each one "good".

Yes, higher numbers are usually bad, just strange that the second always seems to be the best. Spider-Man 2, The Dark Knight, X2 and Superman 2 are for me the best four superhero movies ever made. Same with Empire Strikes Back and Aliens in sci-fi.

#2 probably tends to be the best because we've got the introductions out of the way and can get straight to the good stuff. #1 can drag sometimes because you always have to start out with some farm boy from Kentucky/Tatooine and it's not until an hour into the movie that the real plot starts.
Why they tend to mess it up after that, I don't get. It's like the writers stop taking it seriously and decide to "just have fun with it" which is probably great fun for writers but tends to suck for audiences.
And then there's the Star Trek "even number" phenomena:
#1 slow/boring/weird
#2 awesome KHAAAAAAN
#3 slow/boring/awkward
#4 awesome. Great script. Book was good too.
#5 dumb. God wants to borrow our spaceship.
#6 awesome. That's the one that started basically with the Enterprise surrendering because they couldn't tell where the photon torpedo came from that hit the ambassador's ship. Several good scenes in this one.
Kinda breaks down after that because I didn't particularly like any of the TNG movies. First Contact wasn't bad I guess. "We draw the line he-ah!" Still...time travelling borg. Duuuumb.
But I digress.

What did you guys think of The Hobbit? I just took my 9 year old to see it. I liked it a lot (deliberately avoided the 48fps version), except for the whole Goblin city part, which may have jumped the shark in trying to outdo Moria, and just ended up being kind of silly.
I wouldn't have taken my daughter if I'd seen it beforehand, though - some scary shit in there. Then again, there were a bunch of 4-6 years olds there two, as well as what looked like a 2 or 3 year old, and a tiny baby that couldn't have been more than a couple of months old - some people are crazy.

I liked it. Expectations can be a pain but I think Jackson did well with some of the liberties and the additions from the RotK appendix. Visually it was a fun ride if you didn't dig to deep. The goblin caves were a bit longer and sillier than it needed to be though but it is a film after all. I think he has setup the next two films well.

I thought it was mediocre at best. Too much silliness, and too much added garbage which is only there to enable it to be broken into two movies. I think the second movie will be better though. All the substance from the book should be in there. There was a distinct lack of a specific character in the movie that I hope will be in the second movie. We'll see I guess.

I agree the next two will be better, though. It's hard to introduce 13 new main characters (plus some old ones) all at the same time. I didn't mind any of the additions, and I even rather liked Sylvester McCoy's Radaghast, which I didn't expect after the bad early buzz about him.
All the bridge surfing and falling through countless hard rocky pits without anyone getting hurt kind of annoyed me, though.

For the record, the Spiderman reboot was more of a business decision than anything else. If Sony doesn't keep making them, the rights revert back to Marvel. So they mostly did the reboot really just to retain the rights, because Spiderman 4 fell apart during development and they had to get something out there.
And as a huge fan of the book...World War Z looks HORRIBLE to me. damn fast zombie nonsense.

wow they showed way too much in that. I would have preferred to have been surprised by it.
As an aside, I landed pre-release tickets to a screening of Warm Bodies on Thursday. I don't have high hopes for it, but who knows.
