1) Volunteer for everything you can, after time, you'll be given opportunities to advance you knowledge and increase your skill set: Advance schooling/training, which pays off during the last 2 years ofyour 4-6 year contract.
2) Learn to not take shit personally and brush it off.
3) Learn from everyone. You might find that if you meet people, and find out what they know, they'll be more willing to do what you ask of them because they'll know you're not try'n to pull something over on them.
4) Be honest with yourself in regards to what you know, and what you really know. Don't BS people, it'll come back to you: its' a small world.
5) When you hit a port, dn't just go straight to the bars and hookers, try to see the countries you go to.
6) DO NOT take Diggles perspective when visiting other countries. They're just different, nothing more.
7) Have fun man! Some of the best years of your life will come from this experience.

IN basic training, no. I agree with Thudz there: don't volunteer for shit in basic. All it will be is an extra thing to screw up and get yelled at over. The less responsibilities you can get put on you, the better. All you want to do in basic is get through it as quickly and easily as possible.
Although if you get a chance to volunteer for cleaning tasks (everyone gets one), I actually thought bathroom cleaning duty was the best. If you do anything in the main barracks you'll have 30+ other guys running around doing their thing and potentially messing up the thing you did (e.g., sweeping, dusting, etc), which will lead to you getting yelled at. The bathroom is easily contained. Your team cleans the whole thing then basically ropes the whole thing off except for one stall and Bob's your uncle. You can even make the people who use it after cleaning do their own cleanup so that your team basically cleans it once prior to inspection and then does nothing except supervise the place. The people who sweep the floors in the main rooms basically have no recourse but to learn to like being yelled at because it's impossible to keep it up to specs with so many people running around.

I kept my mouth shut and never received a "chore" to-do. Open you mouth and next thing you know you're picking dick hairs out of the mops with tweezers, I shit you not.
Also, whomever gets assigned Dorm Guard Scheduler, kiss his ass and buy him anything he wants at the mini-exchange. That way he'll either not schedule you for Dorm Guard or atleast not at 3AM.

Funny story. I turned in a dimebag of weed I found on the lawn of our dorm in tech school and for the next 4 years I had a "random" drug test every 3 months. I bet Slamz and Veraphim maybe had 1 all 4 years. I had like 10!

Fair enough slamz, however, I volunteered for everything and didn't take the back seat stance. My boot camp experience was awesome: By volunteering and taking inititive the instructors were more prone to give me 'perks' (food in chow hall, going to pick up clothing, shopping for the group of guys, etc). All those things typically got me out of having to go through all the shit from other people screwing things up.

Is your experience in the US military or Canadian?
From our experience in the US Military you'd be branded a kiss ass and most instructor's wouldn't care and you're comrades would resent you if you received any preferantial treatment and you might find yourself on the receiving end of some good ole fashioned hazing.
I was a witness to a sock 'n lock attack and it's not pretty.
