Re: HBO - Game of Thrones - Jakensama - 04-03-2012

It is going to be west wing meets sports night, which are two of my favorite pre hbo original series era shows.

Re: HBO - Game of Thrones - strife - 04-06-2012

Got my season 1 set in the mail last night and watched 4 episodes... and I'm hooked! I wanted to watch a 5th but I had to work today... stupid work.

Re: HBO - Game of Thrones - OrsunVZ - 04-06-2012

Have you read the books Strife? If not, I want a play by play reaction from you after each episode...

No haven't read the books... I actually have one of the books though(Clash of Kings) which I believe is book 2 of the series. A friend of mine recommended it a couple years ago and I was going to buy the set, but my discount book store only had the 1, so I bought it and never followed up with getting the rest of the set, so never read them. I may go back and read the set after I finish the series, as I'm sure I'll be clamoring for more and it's going to suck to wait until season 2 comes out!

I didn't realize I had the book until I got the set in and saw that it was based on books by GRRM and the name sounded really familiar, so went through my books and found out why.

Umm.. reactions after each episode.. I've already been through the first 4 and the biggest reaction came when Lannister pushed the Stark boy out the window(I'm still learning the names so bare with me...). My jaw dropped and I was like WTF! Each one has definitely got me wanting to watch the next.. glad I'm not having to wait week by week or whatever for the next episode. When Ned killed the Dire wolf was another pretty good reaction from me... that was pretty sad Sad When the wolf fucked up the executioner I was like hell yes!!! I'm a softy for pups Smile

Re: HBO - Game of Thrones - strife - 04-06-2012

Just finished Episode 5 where Jaime stab's Ned's guard in the eye with the dagger. Ned's wife's sister breastfeeding was fucked up! On to 6 Smile

And 6, pretty crazy. Glad they got rid of Vyserys, he was annoying and I was waiting for something to happen to him. I love how there are so many story plots going on, all interesting.

on to 7!
My general response after every episode is WTF! And then I watch the next.

Re: HBO - Game of Thrones - Jakensama - 04-07-2012

I am kind of jealous of strife... not knowing what is next must make the show awesome.. Has anyone ruined anything dude or are you pretty lucky?

I didn't read the thread close enough to have anything ruined for me. And it's been awesome. So happy I bought it... just sad that I only have 3 more episodes to go Sad

Re: HBO - Game of Thrones - strife - 04-07-2012

I was looking through my wife's nook, and she has all of this series on it for some reason..

Re: HBO - Game of Thrones - Donions - 04-07-2012

You actually have 5 to go if you're going to catch up on this season also.

Re: HBO - Game of Thrones - strife - 04-07-2012

yea, no HBO though.. if there was a way to see them w/out HBO I would probably be all over it

Re: HBO - Game of Thrones - strife - 04-08-2012

Just finished season 1. I was shocked they killed Ned... I just expected him to be around for all of the episodes. Such a central character in most of the first chapter, I guess I'm just accustomed to them not killing off those type of characters.

Syrio is a badass. I assume he was killed, but would have been nice to know what happened to him.

Awesome series though.

Strife Wrote:Syrio is a badass.

I know, right? His death actually surprised me more than Ned's because while they were both really likeable characters, Syrio's death didn't actually serve the plot in any way... Sad

Re: HBO - Game of Thrones - OrsunVZ - 04-08-2012

Well Syria might not be dead...

Re: HBO - Game of Thrones - Jakensama - 04-08-2012

Martin has pretty much said he is. No reason to believe he isn't.

Re: HBO - Game of Thrones - OrsunVZ - 04-09-2012

Definitely a few differences in last night's episode, mostly the amplified sex stuff, though. Couple of things kind of bugged me though - Melissandre's treatment of Stannis for one...

My daughter came in last night and asked if Mom and I were into porn now, as it whipped through 3 different sex scenes......

I still liked the episode though. Keeping in mind that it is all new to me.

They were fucking in the book, it just wasn't described as much. Aside from various other hints, her POV straight up says "With Stannis gone her bed found little use"

The ending was the biggest wtf moment to me. It was always fairly obviously that Craster was giving his kids to the others but am wondering what they will do with him attacking Jon - that'll lead to a bit of a divergence from the novel.

Also, its kinda sad that they had to change Asha's name because it sounds like Osha and the average viewer is too stupid to keep track of similarly sounding names

Re: HBO - Game of Thrones - Skelas - 04-09-2012

I can't wait to see rattleshirt in full regalia, they did have a quick shot of him in the previews. Lots of cool shit coming up. I sure hope that fat fuck Martin is writing. If he Jordan's us i'm going to be pissed.

Re: HBO - Game of Thrones - Jakensama - 04-10-2012

When Jordan croaked we got a superior author to finish the series..

/just saying.

Re: HBO - Game of Thrones - Skelas - 04-10-2012

While I never finished wheel of Time (I gave up after 5 books I think, he meanders WAY to much for my taste) I did read Sanderson's Mistborn novels, and yes, he's a pretty damn good writer.

Re: HBO - Game of Thrones - Vllad - 04-10-2012

I think you are better off NOT reading the books and then watching series on HBO.

While Martin is a talented writer the books always just pissed me off. I don't know how to say anything with out spoilers so stop reading here if you want to be surprised later.
I just don't see the point of bringing up the deathwalkers and then never incorporating them into the story. The problem with Martin's style is if you don't like his characters his stories are pointless. He kills off so many main characters that I find I just don't get invested into his characters.

I want to know what the fuck is going on in the north!

All the lore is basically the fantasy but the real story is just basic machiavelian crap. At best the lore is all made up fantasy from a bunch of horrible people starving for power. At worst he takes the last two books and brings out the fantasy parts of the story. That would really piss me off.

To me Martin is great at creating fantasy but he isn't so good on writing about it. With the show on TV you can skip all of the crap and just get down to the good parts.

Martin is basically a fantasy prick tease. It would be like if Tolkein created this entire world but only wrote about the local politics of 4th age kings.

Vllad
Re: HBO - Game of Thrones - strife - 04-10-2012

just saw a news article that it had been re-upped for a 3rd season.. SWEET!

Vllad
The fantasy has been a part of the story since the first book. It starts off very much in the background but is built upon more and more in subsequent books. In the first book there are the green dreams, the Others, the dragons, and the witch woman. Yes, the story is very light on the magical fantasy elements but they are there.

My problem with Martin is that he is a sick puppy. I used to read his Wild Card stories but they eventually became so sick, twisted, and depraved that I had to stop. So far this series has not reached that point in print but on the screen it got very close just in the first season.

Re: HBO - Game of Thrones - Slamz - 04-10-2012

Yeah, I'm curious what everyone thinks about Game of Thrones in the end. I enjoyed books 1-2 but quit after book 4. Aside from the fact that it was 6 fucking years between the release of book 4 and book 5, when I say "I quit" I mean I had no desire to read any further books after 4 anyway, for basically the reasons Vllad outlined (maybe Martin took so long writing book 5 because after 4, even he didn't like the series anymore). I'll be curious to see what everyone else thinks, if the show keeps up and goes into book 4 (presumably season 4).

I'm somewhat curious as to what they'll do with the show if it catches up to the books. Apparently he has 2 more to do and at this rate HBO is going to catch up.

Re: HBO - Game of Thrones - OrsunVZ - 04-10-2012

I think book 2 and 3 were amazing. 4 got tedious, but 5 was pretty damn good. They way he dealt with 4 and 5 will always bug me, and they will HAVE to deal with that differently for HBO. I am really looking forward to seeing how it actually goes down though, because I believe they could really improve on the pace of things.

But 5 finished with me starting to feel a little wheel of time out. With lots of these sagas, the story becomes so big, you suffer from fatigue. Maartin needs to close at least a few loops in book 6 to keep me reading.
