I think it is the viewer not the subject that determine the level of fear. Vampires aren't less scary today because we know more about them. They are less scary now because more people know they aren't real.
For example we know a hell of a lot more about Adolf Hitler then we know about Vampires. Having another Hitler rise scrares the shit out of people regardless of how much know about them. Why? We know it is real.
I am sure their is someone out in the world today that believes monsters are just as real as Hitler. That nieve thought process however has shrunk and continues to shrink in the world because modern technology has made the world smaller and more educated.
That is the biggest threat not only to monsters but to religion, art, culture and human values.
