Not being able to tackle with a team comprised of 4-5 star recruits from Texas is not playing down, it is piss poor coaching. There is 0 excuse to not perform when you have the money and recruiting that we do.
Last year, hokies couldn't tackle and a host of other things. Early 2000s there was similar issues. However, is that Bud Foster's or Beamer's fault? No. The kids need to do it and if what coaches are preaching and practicing every week isn't getting through then there is only so much you can do. Not saying there is no accountability on them, especially the Def coordinator, but that's how it goes.
If you expect a national championship every year or even a Big 12 champion appearance, then I can't help you. Parity in college sports has caught up with football which is now more like basketball. SECPN will still try and sell you the brand name teams and "who's the best" arguements of teams and recruits. Reality is that most mid level programs can win any game as long as coaches and players prepare and the players execute.
Unless you shell out huge $$ to bring in someone well known coach and staff, then you run a risk of becoming a USC, Michigan, ND, etc. Big name teams with "high" star recruits who don't do squat most of the time. That's about where you think you are now but I think with a better coordinators you'd be fine and should be happy with a Nat Champ game within the last 10 years. If you look at teams like Florida, who has the top ranked recruiting as well, they don't even make it to the SEC championship.
