Dustie, it's all pretty much opinion and preference but I wouldn't consider anything better than the high end Spiringfield Armorys, Kimbers and Les Baers. My personal preference for handgun is the 1911 model. My favorite caliber is 10mm or .45 ACP but the ammo is somewhat rare (10mm) and expensive (both). For overall versatility, popularity and affordability you can't beat 9mm.
Hands down most versitile firearm is the 12 gauge shotgun. That would be 'A' number 1 on my list if I owned nothing. Next would be a sidearm. What they always say is the side arm is just to get you to your rifle. And last would be an M1A.
