It isn't illogical at all. In-fact it is completely logical.
With out this "flaw" as you call it some other speicies or non-sentient species would be running earth right now.
Any other species you create would eventually aquire this "flaw" no matter how logical they are because survival supercedes all else.
I will grant you that maybe their is some other template for life evolving in a different fashion but until you find that example the traits we show are the only one I have to go on. Two dominant species can't co-exist. They are either both change to become something else or one of them is destroyed.
