I think the media is defining it by ratings and viewers. Not just TV. The last world cup final had over 750 million viewers, (which broke all the previous records for any sporting event), but very little by percentage from America.
In the end if America won the world cup, Americans would watch. Would it sustain? I dont know, I think they would have to continue to be on top.
