The show this year went very little like the book. In the book their are two armies that come to Winterfell.
The first is lead by Winterfell personal who come back to Winterfell after breaking the siege on Deepwood Motte. With Theon is a guy named Reek (who was actually at Winterfell when Theon took it. However since Reek was a stranger to Winterfell he gained Theon's favor). Reek claims he can bring help that will break the siege. Reek slips out. Quite a while later Reek comes through with an army that defeats the Winterfell army.
The Reek thing becomes a theme down the road.
Most of what transpired is unknown since it is seen through the eyes of Brandon who was in the tomb the whole time.
However it is surmised that Theon lets that army that broke the siege through the gates and it turns out to be the Ramsey which is the bastard of Bolton.

about halfway through book 2? I can't remember where the Red Wedding happens, but i'm pretty sure it's book 2.

We are at end of book 2, the RW is midway through book 3 which will be the stopping point next season.

I haven't watched a show live in 10 years. I typically just buy the entire season of something I want to watch when it comes out.
This is the first Sunday in like 3 months I didn't sit down in front of the TV. I guess I enjoyed the season.

I finally caught up last night - great season. I hadn't read the books, and was kind of glad about that. Definitely a show full of surprises to be enjoyed.
Ironically, one of the main reasons I was looking forward to the very last episode was that I was happily anticipating Tywin finally recognizing Tyrion for his heroic role in Blackwater. Couldn't have been more wrong on that one... I should have learnt by the now the story rarely goes in the direction you expect.

Been reading the book... I'm about 4/5 the way through book 1 and enjoying it... I am really glad that I watched season 1 before reading the books though... It gives me a clearer picture of what is happening... after I finish book 1, I'll probably go watch season 1 again and maybe some things I missed will come to light...

Just broke down and ordered HBO, and Comcast rocked and gave it to me for free for 3 months and then 10$ after that... I went in expecting to pay $20 for 1 month and got 4 months for 10.. I'll take it.

And just finished season 2, 2 days, 10 episodes.. not bad 
I haven't finished book 2 yet, I'm about 100 pages in and took some time off reading to watch season 2. It seemed like events in the book were really out of order compared to the show...
questions n-stuff about the book/show below
[spoiler]I was curious what happened to the Hound? Did I miss it? At the end of episode 9 he was with Sansa and said he'd get her out of there... then episode 10 happens and Sansa is still at the castle when Tywin gets his hand pendant.
I wasn't real big on the whole Stannis and the demon killing Renly, I wish they could have left that out and had Renly assassinated or die in battle... One thing I'm curious about and not sure if the fact that I've read book 1 and watched the seasons so closely together... but I don't remember them mentioning that Renly is gay in the books... am I just not remembering that? I felt like they went way more into that in the show... which is probably because the book never uses Renly's point of view[/spoiler]

The books never directly says Loras and Renly are gay, but there are lots of hints about it and comments from other characters that make it somewhat apparent, and GRRM had said he was gay prior to the series being shot.

In the TV series Sansa told the Hound "no" because she thought the siegers were going to be victorious and rescue her - which makes her a lot dumber there than in the books where instead of turning down the Hound's offer to free her, she convinces him not to rape her. You know, slight differences that completely change two complex-ass characters :?
The method of Renly's death has a rather large effect on Brienne of Tarth, who becomes a more important character later.

The method of Renly's death and other such incidents is my biggest complaint about the books and the series in general.
It feels like at times Martin just pulls stuff out of his ass and uses fantasy to accomplish the impossible. His fantasy components are interesting enough to expand on but he really never does. It is fantasy out of the blue. He would have been better off just leaving the fantasy crap out of stories.
I am of the mind set that you either expand it or don't include it at all.

I finished the first book and came up with nothing beside Loras dressing as a bit of a fop.

This. And of all the deviations from the book, this is the one that annoyed me the most - HBO just wanting a broader audience at my expense. I also went back through the first book to see where the hints were, because we talked about it here on the boards following the first instance in season one.
