Sounds like we're catching up to the point where I decided I was done with the books and just didn't care anymore about what happens next.

I've not read the books. How close is the series actually tracking with the books at this point?

The general storyline is pretty similar, the details are rapidly diverging - some storylines are merged, some omitted, some added completely by the tv series (Robb's wife is a completely different character, married for a different reason, and was neither preggers nor at the wedding, for example).
Probably fine considering how after next season they are getting into books 4 and 5 where the pacing sucks.
The one thing that annoyed me with the changes was Robb's wife. In the book he was wounded and ended up fucking the girl who tended him back to health and then he felt guilty about that and his honor made him marry her - which made sense since he is Ned's son and it goes along with the logic that being honorable will get your ass killed.
In the tv show he seems much more selfish.

I think the show has done an awesome job and has improved on the books, making it more concise, better paced, and less characters bogging everything down. My only gripe this season is the constant attention Theon got, as he is not even in the 3rd book and we only see the result of his toture and not the process of it.

Interesting, the GOT facebook site posted the red wedding chapter for free for comparison.

Having read the books the end of this season was boring. Was that it?
The story is out of step lock with the books. The Red Wedding was in the middle of the book so I kept waiting for other shoes to drop that never did.

They have broken the 3rd book up into 2 seasons since it was so large.

I just got caught up on these. The red wedding was great, and my wife's multi-day reaction was hilarious to watch, but my favorite scene was when The Unsullied were handed over to Dany. The music, the pace, everything combined had me literally goosebumped and shivering. When she gave her dragon the fire command I nearly jizzed. Awesome scene.
I was talking to a co-worker about it. He just nodded and said "nerdgasm..."

Yea, Danerys is quickly becoming a favored character(granted, most of the characters are dying off). I unfortunately had the red wedding a little bit ruined for me because it popped up in my news feeds with people talking about it. I wasn't sure who all died, but I knew shit was going to hit the fan for it.
One of the great things about GoT in my mind is how your perception of characters changes over time. Take the Dog for example.
The worst thing about this series, is it's only 10 episodes long, and it's going to be forever until the next season starts
Oh, and Gray Worm is a bad ass!

The continuous dropping of shoes does get old though...

That is the hardest thing about George Martin stories. He will write an entire book centered around characters that he is going to kill before the end of the book. By the end of the book you are reading about characters you hardly got to know.
All I can say is don't get too attached to anyone.
George Martin is one of those guys who has character ADD. I think he just gets fed up writing about a character and really only enjoys creating characters more than continueing flushing them out. He wakes up one day and just decides he has had enough of a character then kills them off.
Basically the more he writes about a character the greater the chance of them dying.
If I were HBO I would get off the George Martin train and turn the story into something bigger then Martin ever made it. Otherwise GoT is going to end up just irratating its viewers and will die a quick death.

I personally like it. Knowing that you never know when/if someone is going to die adds greatly to the show. Watching a show where you know the main character is going to live isn't nearly as interesting IMO.

The TV show is upping that rather than toning it down. In the book Robb was not really a main character, he was the only stark without a POV section. The only central character who has been killed is Ned.

I think any medium that makes a habit of it risk destroying the enjoyment of the medium. Especially TV. Their are very few stories that are engaging enough as it is. When you start killing off personalities that are easy to feel attached to you could very easily end up with a show like Lost.
In the end Lost was so full of fucktards it made the show unwatchable. When people don't like or care about its characters people don't engage.
Take "The Walking Dead".
Not many viewers would watch the show if the survivors were a bunch of meth addict rapist who sought out to exploit and kill other survivors.

Don't read if you haven't read past where we are in the show.
But the complaint doesn't really hold water - he has killed, to date, exactly one main character - Ned. It's all side characters that have died since then. What other big POV characters died? Catelyn is back as Zombiecatelyn, and Jon will almost certainly not die or be brought back by Mellisandre as he is pretty clearly the son of Lyanna Stark and Rhaegar Targaryan and the third head of the dragon (unless he is just a giant red herring).
If anything, the show is the one to blame if people get pissed off about character deaths. They built up Robb as a main character before he was died, they invented his wife as a completely different character, made her more central, put her at the wedding and killed her. They introduced some random whore into the storyline which really advanced the plot in no way just so we could be shocked when Joffrey killed her. They have made Tywin a bigger character than he was in the book so it will be a bigger deal when he dies next season, etc.
I'm spoiler tagging this just in case you haven't watched the last season...
I think having the idea that the main characters could be killed, and actually killing them are 2 different things. The main characters right now in the show IMO are Arya, Tyrion, Jon, Bran and Daenerys. Everyone else are lesser characters(although some have bigger roles in the movie and I may have missed a character or 2).
Other than Daenery's and maybe Bran, I wouldn't be shocked if any of the others were killed... I think Daenerys' role in the show is too large right now that killing her would kill a huge part of the show. Bran's character has developed into being a major part of the series going forward, so I don't think they'd kill him. But they could easily kill off any of the others right now. Arya is a main character but really doesn't play a huge part in the overall story of the show. Tyrion has been attacked by his family and you never know when he will piss them off again and have him killed, although I think Tyrion is too likeable to kill off right now... At the end of the season, Jon was left as possibly being dead anyways(sorry, taking 3 arrows is quite a bit). They killed off Robb which granted he was a main character in the show, but IMO he lost a lot of likability in the way he handled the marriage to the Frey's and how stupidly he handled the Karstark ordeal and fucked up the war.
You could probably make a case that Sansa is a main character, but she doesn't add much to the show and there really is no reason to kill her right now other than to just get rid of her.
I do agree with Vllad that actually killing off all of the main characters would be bad for the show... but the having the idea in your head that any character could be killed at any time is very good for the show. Actually following through with it, could kill the show.
More book readers only:
I do find it amusing how in the book that literally the only person whom life has not shat upon in the past several years is Littlefinger, for whom all seems to be going great. Not a single ill thing has happened to him from the beginning of the story.

Chapter characters? Well, no. There was the prince from the south who got roasted which his story seemed like a total waste of print. However, there are a lot of character development through the eyes of others. For me it still counts as semi main characters. The books still beat Harry Potter though...
Are you guys reading the same books? Main characters are not dying at the drop of a hat, dunno what you are talking about.
Robb never even had his own chapter. Off the top of my head there is what...two characters with chapters named after them that actually die?
