There is no over use of T&A or foul language.. Only one "steamy" scene with Kirk and another cadet. But it is short and tasteful.

As tasteful as a scene showing half naked Kirk practically dry humping a green chick in panties and a bra can be. I loved that scene myself because it plays right into the classic long running joke.

Really, just cover the kids eyes for 45 seconds and it's done.

Darth Vader crying at the end ruined any hope of redemption for the new trilogy forever. It practically ruined the original trilogy for me knowing that the first thing Darth Vader does in his badass life support suit is cry like a beyotch.

While Star Trek was a fairly entertaining movie I just don't think you can mess with a chaundra that has as much history as Star Trek does.

Why in the world would you try to mess with the history of Star Trek?

You will eventually lose if you do that because your core viewers won't accept it. As is evidence by one the post in this thread. It is especially true by using the time travel bull shit. They permantly changed the Star Trek universe.

Paramount will eventually regret that decision.

I'm not going to argue with you Vllad, but let's face it, core Trekkies left the franchise in droves starting with Voyager.

I'm not going to argue that Paramount tried everything to keep Star Trek lore and history intact. That would be stupid considering how many times they absolutely fucked it over completely with every attempt to build around the history as established by TOS.

I still don't know how I feel revisiting the TOS characters without the established history, but they sure did figure out a way to free themselves of it.

I know as a TOS fan, I'll just be happy if they respect what the show was all about, that is, the relationships among the main characters. As soon as they start screwing with those completely, I think you will see the new franchise fail. At this point, I think they've just added some twists taht I'd really like to see through.

I mean, really, who cares if the crew of the Enterprise never gets to meet Plato's Children this time around?

Considering the box office numbers for the previous two movies and the low ratings of enterprise I'm not sure they are regretting this opening weekend. I think its a fairly good way to launch a few movies that won't have to be bogged down with having to deal with the continuity of the mythos (as poorly as that was done anyways).

Of course, I am biased since I never particularly cared for the original series that much anyway.

The Enterprise series was more about UPN trying to establish itself, and not allowing the show to be franchised / distributed. Hell places like Iowa couldn't even watch the show. I for one think that had it been available, it would have run for many more seasons.

I do agree 100% with Vllad on the universe. I mean seriously, Vulcan no longer exist PRE 1st season start trek. wow.

But I can live with that. The problem I had with the movie was the ridicules coincidences like Spoc being on the planet that kirk is sent to, and low and behold, there is Scottie on the planet too. What are the chances of that?? Then there is that fact that Scottie can come on the enterprise without ever seeing it before, and become the "expert" like he had been studing the spencs.... Come one...

Then there was the fact that Pike, make Kirk first officer. this is start flleet. With a mill.ion regulations. Your going to take a guy that isnt even suppose to be on tghe ship and make him first officer on a whim??

But dont get me wrong, from a entertainment perspective, I liked it allot. It was just messed up in some area's. Over all good action flick.

Yeah, this was the one that got me and one of the reasons why I think that the whole Kirk characterization, overall, was the weakest. I think there could have been some happy medium between something like TOS where he just appears on the bridge, and TNG where watching central characters advance was ridiculously slow and involved.

Also along those lines, I recall Kirk receiving an accomodation for reprogramming the Kobayashi Maru scenario. What, about the alternate timeline, would result in Kirk being potentially left behind when the cadets were assigned their duties in the first place?

It just would have made more sense to just give him the accomodation and have him end up an officer on the Enterprise a result.

The writing on BSG was no where near as bad as the atrocity that is Spielburg, the fact that you didn't like the direction they took is not the same as shitty writing (which is the case in all 6 star wars movies).

As for the believability of the new Star Trek, whats new? Is it really as unrealistic as the entire Klingon Race magically changing physical characteristics between TOS and TNG?

I saw it today and tried to put all the history behind me and just try and enjoy the movie. I did. Movie was good and I was entertained. Mission accomplished.

McCoy was great.
Spock was great.
Kirk was a bit douchey for my tatstes.
I thought Willow did a good job too even though he didnt talk.

People have similar issues with Spielburg. ET replacing guns with walkie talkies and a lot of people didn't like the last Indiana Jones movie.


Although I thought it was great. People seemed upset that it had aliens in it, but seeing how the first Indiana Jones movie had spirits that come out of a box and melt people's faces, I didn't see where aliens was some new stretch.

But anyway, Aliens are more believable than magic boxes or magic cups or magic rocks. But the new movie would have been 1000x better with a zombie mola ram running around ripping out hearts.

I can't help but be turned off however when they do things like put a 17 year old Chekov in charge of the ship everytime the Captain leaves the ship or bridge.

I mean this is the military. Out of 500 people on the ship the best you can do is a 17 year old ensign?

How fucking hard is it to just bump the story up 5 more years.

Even if the story did have a good reason for it being filled with cadets during the event, you surely don't put them all on the flagship afterwords. Fuck, no matter how well Kirk did on that mission should he have been promoted to captain right out of school.

yes, there are issues, but think about the alternatives. can you imagine the outcry if, in the sequel, we found the cast had all been promoted to bridge officers due to their heroism, and assigned to run a ship more suited to their age and experience level? a replenishment ship, perhaps? or a small destroyer tasked to escorting merchant convoys?

you know the first thing that would happen is they would, by mere chance, happen to cross paths with the Enterprise, whose entire bridge crew has been disabled by some mysterious ailment or weapon (along with the first medical officer, and first engineering officer, who happened to be on the bridge at the time), and they would be forced to take over and save the day.

better to save us the time and bother and just put them on the Enterprise now.
