That is what Slamz and I just said. Making it more palatable for guys by default will make it man friendly. It isn't football but degree's isn't what this thread is about.

Gilmore Girls/Sex and the City does nothing to make it palatable to guys. So you just answered your own question. If Orsuns post was talking about some dude watching Gilmore Girls you could see the point. For Buffy you can't.

I would say Buffy falls more to the catering towards chicks compared to the typical chick sub plots (girl fall in love with vampire.. never see that aimed at girls these days) and the fact it was on a channel with a programming block aimed at that demographic.

Firefly was far less soap opera-y.

It's target audience was men, particularly geeky men.

The fact that it was aired on and rated highly on the estrogen block make me question that, as the audience it reached was not primarily men.

Yes, it makes it more palatable to a guy demographic, its certainly aimed at a wide demographic which is why I've repeatedly said it alone would not warrant ridicule for watching - unless you were in the original habit of calling out other guys manhood, then it's questionable enough to warrant mocking.

Putting a hot chick or funny situations in a Rom Com may make it okay or even enjoyable to sit through with your wife or girlfriend, but its still not something you would watch with a group of guys

I saw Tricia Helfer on Sunday at the NYC ComicCon. She is just as insanely hot in person as she was on that show. And the woman who played Callie was adorable.

On the flip side Katee Sackhoff has not been aging gracefully.

Honestly not sure what BSG was trying to be. I don't think the writers knew, either. It definitely didn't start off as a chick flick. Baltar was an annoyance and I expected he'd get shipped off to the Cylons in short order but nooooo. By the last season I was only still watching the show out of a sense of investment.

Incidentally, I think Lost is more of a chick flick than Buffy or BSG.



The root question of this thread is whether "nerd card" and "man card" are contradictory.

Buffy is a "nerd card" thing. If you are a nerd, you like Buffy, or vice versa. And considering we are on a forum largely dedicated to people who have spent a lot of time pretending to be wizards, ogres or spaceship pilots, I'm pretty sure you all have a nerd card. (I imagine the conversation would be something like, "Dude, don't pretend to have a man card when you watch Buffy. Let's discuss manly things. Did you see that epic purple staff I got for my wizard last night? Shit was so cash!")

10 years ago, the man club did not allow nerds. Now, if you don't have a bit of nerd in you, you can't get a job -- so I think the man club may have expaneded its ranks and offered membership to nerds. Its a very deep question, it might be up there with "why does gravity exists?"

Therefore the real question is what else this person claimed revoked a man card.

For example, you can't tell someone they lose points for playing WOW and then say you like Buffy. These are both "nerd card" activities.

On the other hand, you can claim man-card status AND claim to like Buffy and STILL tell Orsun he lost man points because his favorite show is Gilmore Girls, which is clearly outside of man card territory, even if nerd card territory is included.

Some things can only be liked if you are a man and not a nerd.

On Syphy (watch out or you'll catch it) they had a behind the scenes preview thing where they talked to the creators. They said they came up with the idea while drunk at a bar. I'm assuming they did the rest of there brainstorming there too. If you think of the show from that perspective then it makes perfect sense.

Also for the nerd card here is a list. You can sneer and/or mock anyone that is ranked lower than you on it.

Well me too but I also know a lot with no fantasy/sci fi inklings who do like drivel like twilight and buffy.

I think at a certain mainstream level things don't necessarily give you nerd points:

For example watching the star wars movies does not necessarily give you nerd point
Knowing the name of the Wookie homeworld (or any expanded universe stuff) does.

Watching Lord of the Rings did not necessarily give you nerd points.
Knowing the tediously written mythology behind Sauran being a fallen angel or whatever does.
