I will assume you mean the southeast, since in the Southwest I can get any of that shit that you were mentioning about not finding in Atlanta.
Cajun food, Tex Mex, and even Baha beats any of the weak ass culinary approximations of said cuisines in Yankeeville (outside of NYC which wins by default by being one of the few civilized places in our country - and even there its fucking difficult to find serviceable Mexican.).
I eat out 3x a week at least and have been to nice places on 6 continents, I'll still put Houston's restaraunt scene up there with almost anywhere.

Actually no they can't be worked around. That is the point.
Zirak Wrote:I am shocked at your claim of blandness and lack of spiciness however. We love our spicy foods in the South - or at least the folks I hang out with do. Habaneros do grow here by the way, I have grown them myself and used them in making my own salsa. One of my favorite dishes at aforementioned Mexican place is a habanero shrimp dish that they make. Delicious.
I stand by the claim that in general the South is the most bland food in America, however don't mistake spicey with hot.
Take for example Italian food or pizza in the south. Italian sauces in the south are made with sugar and are very sweet. In New York City it is dominated by garlic/oregano and have no sugar. I have never found a good spicy pizza in the South. Spicy in this case being heavy garlic and oregano.
Jake,
Yea I was talking about the SouthEast. I agree with you about Houston. The third best Mexican breakfast and the second best prime rib I ever had was in Houston.

While I am a great fan of spicy hot dishes I also quite like the other type of spicy as well which I refer to as well seasoned food as opposed to spicy food to avoid confusion. And I dunno, maybe in my travels I've just never been exposed to the right places but I find that when I go out for good Italian food here I am able to find places with well seasoned food of that ethnicity. The same goes for several other ethnicities of food such as Mexican. You know we do have populations of Mexican, Chinese, Italian, and others who do own and operate restaurants and make food according to their backgrounds.
Perhaps, as with music, it is a subjective preference of yours and of mine that determines what we think tastes best in food and what regions have the best. Don't get me wrong, I'm not claiming that the South has better Italian, Chinese, or whatever than the North (and I will admit that I have not found Greek or German food anywhere down here to compare to what I have had in the north) just that these things don't suck just because they are in the South and that perhaps one person might prefer the Northern variety while another prefers the Southern. I do of course hold to the fact that Memphis BBQ is better than anywhere else and the rest of the country has no idea how to correctly make cornbread and our Cajun and Soul food are the best.

German food? How do you fuck up pork and potatoes?

1) Real BBQ is Beef, not that southeast trash that was only developed because pigs were cheap and had to be drowned in vinegar and tomato sauce because the meat was traditionally crap. Specifically central Texas BBQ is real BBQ. If you must have pork you can throw ribs and sausage with the brisket, but the sauce shouldn't be something it hast to be drown in. It should look something like this:

Thats not an opinion, thats fact goddamnit
2) "Our" Cajun food shouldn't be considered the Southeast, its south Louisiana which culturally should its own zone.
Whether 'bad' or 'good', I generally did find during living in the south that things have a lot less variety. Most probably because Americans don't travel too often and southerners in general tend to be provincial even by American standards..... an adventurous night out eating with some of my georgia relatives would include going somewhere other than Krystal....

There very little regional differances in food in America any more. One of the great tragedies of cheap energy and transportation is the homgonization of our cities. It used to be that when I traveled,I would look forward to the differances in culture and food. But now every place is the same.

I understand what you are saying. Just being in a region doesn't mean it sucks. We are talking generalities.
I don't think it is subjective as one might think. All you have to do is ask people who don't live in a region what they think about that regions food. Like you said you are from the south so your idea on what is or isn't bland may be the Southern idea.
You don't have to take my word for it. Just talk to others not from the South.
OR
Better yet come spend some time with me eating!
Memphis does have good (dry rub) BBQ as does the South in general like JJ's rib shack in Atlanta. Ironically the best BBQ I have ever eaten is in Rochester NY although in general New York has bad BBQ.

You need to come hang out with me. Culture still abounds in America.
Go to poorer cities like Buffalo and Detroit where Greek, Polish and Russian cultures thrive. Their are family businesses of all kinds since their is very little to no corporate work. Living in cities in the north east is like living in the 70's again since people are in the service businesses in order to be employed.
I am telling you it is so great.
I travel so much for FedEx and their really is great culture to see in this country.

I would like to officially disagree that "bland" is bad. When I eat food, I want to taste the food. I want to eat pork and be able to taste pork -- not have it be pork textured peppers, because it was so spicy that all you could taste was the spice. I do mild chili because I like the taste of chili. I want to taste beef and beans and onions and cheese and bell peppers. I don't want it to basically be a soup that tastes entirely of "ARGH" because all of the individual tastes have been pounded into oblivion by a heap of spicy peppers.
A lot of Thai food can be like this. Technically you're eating beef and noodles. It doesn't taste like beef or noodles. It tastes like burning. You could replace the beef and noodles with tofu and rat intestines and probably not notice any difference in taste because all you can taste is the spice anyway. The taste of noodles and beef is completely overwhelmed and is purely there for texture. Having to eat tofu and rat intestine is probably how overly spicy food got invented in the first place ("Oh god this is awful. Here, add a pound of dried peppers. SWEET JESUS THIS IS HOT. WELL AT LEAST WE CAN'T TASTE THE RAT.") Later, when people stopped being poor, they were able to upgrade to better ingredients but didn't notice the difference because they kept it just as spicy as before.

Thats not an opinion, thats fact goddamnit Them's fightin' words! I agree that beef does make some good BBQ and am quite fond of BBQ beef brisquit. Pulled pork though is fabulous as well (and is my preference when it comes to BBQ) and if you are having it drowned in vinegar and tomato sauce then you have not had good BBQ pulled pork. For that matter, where the heck are you getting BBQ drowned in vinegar? The only way I get vinegar on my BBQ is via a dollop of vinegar based cole slaw on my sandwich. When it comes to ribs there are things to like about both beef and pork ribs and I am happy with either.
I watched a food show a while back where they did a big comparison of BBQ from the different styles prevalent in the US and had a big taste competition and Memphis style BBQ won out over the other regions thus confirming what I already knew.

Been a while since i've seen a thread derailed so well to a totally unrelated topic.
Btw Zirak, I saw that show you were talking about - for the taste test, they shipped the BBQ to California for their opinion and reheated.... thus proving 2 things:
1) they broke cardinal rule #1 - they reheated. Reheated food tastes nothing like freshly cooked bbq
2) Californians have no taste
If you want real BBQ, come to Houston during the BBQ cook off (at the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo) - its world class. One of my dad's employees took 3rd place in the brisket category last year - he cooked one for my dad once... best BBQ ever (especially coupled with an awesome sauce).

Isn't memphis style bbq sauce vinegarized? Anyways, most southern sauces are waay too sweet.

Steve Job's new authorized biography is apparently filled with his hate filled rants about google being a bunch of idea thieves.
Apparently Xerox PARC has declined to comment..

But Google ARE a bunch of idea thieves. I'm sure what grated the most was the betrayal by Schmidt, who sat on Apple's board soaking up all the secret iPhone plans, and passing them back to his boys at Google.
As for Xerox Parc, Apple paid Xerox in pre-IPO stock later worth millions to see their stuff. Xerox had the cool ideas, but had no clue what to do with it. Later, when the Mac became huge, Xerox tried to sue Apple and the case was thrown out of court because Apple has paid them for those concepts.
So Xerox had ideas (nothing more), and Apple turned it into a complete product. Later on, Microsoft completely ripped off Apple by copying the Mac interface for Windows. However...that was the fault of Apple's management after Jobs had been kicked out - they sold the rights to Bill Gates (idiots). So you can't say Microsoft stole it, as Apple gave them the keys to the kingdom.
Google outright stole what Apple had, and now their manufactures are paying the price for that. Despite everyone here saying these lawsuits are bullshit, the courts seem to disagree. Apple is winning their cases, and those brought in retaliation are being thrown out as having no merit.
Everyone in the tech industry knows Google stole the iPhone design. Google thought they could just buy Apple off later, but Jobs refused. Now they are in trouble, despite their market share. And I'd be willing to bet a lot of money that by the start of next year, iOS will be taking market share back from Android bigtime.

I just find the cognitive dissonance with apple fans amusing.
When they rip off Xerox's GUI/Mouse interface and make it more marketable they are marketing geniuses, when Microsoft does the same to them they are cursed as thieves - despite the fact that by apples own "I made it popular so it is mine" logic they were beat at their own game since their sad little OS never came remotely close to taking a dangerous market share from microsoft.

Nothing solid has been found in Apple's defense yet, even this injunction will bite them in the ass if they end up losing and the case gets thrown out and under german law apple has to pay them damages..
Also, amusing how when google copies a feature it is outright theft, when iOS adds the notification feature that android had since launch it is innovation.

Xerox really didn't have anything, and weren't going to do anything with what they had. Apart from using a mouse and icons, the Mac was a million light years away from what Xerox did. Whereas Microsoft just copied exactly what Apple had done. But like I said, in neither case was it "stealing", because in both cases the technology was paid for. You're calling Microsoft thieves, I'm not.

I give Microsoft props - they (for once) innovated bigtime with Windows Phone 7.5 and the upcoming Windows 8, rather than copying Apple.

Here's the most recent data I've seen:
http://www.bgr.com/2011/10/05/android-io...re-in-u-s/
Apple at 27.3%, and Android at 43.7%.
That's a 16.4% difference. How about we say I win if Apple narrows that gap to 12% or less? That should be a safe bet for you, since you believe Android will keep on growing unabated, and a year earlier it was 24% iPhone vs 15% Android. In a year iPhone grew share by just 3%, while Android rose 28.7%! So Apple couldn't possibly reverse that by the end of the year, right?
