Geektastic movies for 2012

I am so sorry to spoil the plot of an obviously complex story that is sure to make its mark on cinematic history taking its place with Casablanca and Dr. Strangelove as a truly masterful contribution to the zeitgeist.

the whole notion of remaking Total Recall seems wrong to me. they're supposed to remake old movies from before I was born, not movies that came out while I was in school.

And why Total Recall in particular? It wasn't exactly a blockbuster concept. It would be like remaking Beetlejuice. I mean hey, I liked that movie and all, but it's not exactly something I'm clamoring for a remake of. When I went through my crazy-DVD-buying phase, Total Recall didn't even make the list.

I liked, for example, the new TRON movie. That was a good one to do. But technically that was a really-late-arriving-sequel, not a remake. (A remake of the original TRON might be really good. It was one of those movies that was perhaps a bit ahead of its time on available special effects.)

Avengers is getting a bunch of rave tweets from the celebs at the premiere last night - looks like Josh Whedon may have hit it out the park (nice one-two with this and Cabin in the Woods).

I hadn't realized cabin in the woods was josh Wheldon. I had no interest in that movie before. Now i'm interested.

He didn't direct, but he did co-write and produce, and has been very hands-on. I'm hoping to talk my wife into seeing it with me this weekend...although it will probably end up being some chick flick instead.

92% on Rotten Tomatoes - not bad for a horror movie.

I don't think Iron Skies has an American release any time in the near future.

Apparently they have a "confirmed theatrical release" in the US but no date:

I thought it was just going to be a straight-to-DVD (or straight-to-download) movie to begin with.

I saw Cabin in the Woods with friends last night, and it was great! The comedy never felt out of place, but there was also no shortage of fear and blood.

You sort of have to respect a movie that has the balls to
end the entire god damned world!
Well, I talked my wife into going to see Cabin In The Woods with me for date night after all...

...and now she's sworn never to let me pick me a movie ever again.

Ouch! Not a big fan of straight up horror but thrillers can be either OK or great! As for Cabin in the Woods have to see it to judge but Chain's judgments are usually accurate very few movies she and I can't agree on. I have heard the good stuff that it creates tone and scenes very well but are there any glaring flaws or any real complaints? If its just minor stuff then no need to mention. Also what are people's thoughts about Avengers Initiative?! All the clips look great but no word on the main villain/s aside from Loki. So a bit nervous about that. Also huge props to Legend of Korra. Which proves that time skips and sequels can be done very well! I know this is Geektastic Movies discussion but seriously anyone a fan of Aang and the first series should go check this sequel pronto!

Best to go into it not really knowing anything about it. But let's just say there is a little bit of every horror flick you've ever seen in there (literally), but in a good way. Even some Cthulhu... And it's very funny.

Definitely falls in the "geektastic" category, which is where I lost my decidedly non-geeky wife (she almost walked out...)

Harsh! Well hopefully movie rights will once again be yours would hate to hear that you can't see the Dark Knight Rises without her or I guess if she didn't say you could go by yourself or with friends not a huge problem. As it happens the There and Back Again premieres around that time! Tolkein all the way.

I had no interest to see Cabin in the woods until my son went and saw it and loved it. Going to try and go this weekend.

Pretty cool...Joss Whedon's only directed two movies. The first, Serenity (great flick) made $25m in it's entire theatrical run. Avengers just cleared $200m in it's first weekend...

(Plus Avengers has $641m worldwide already - Serenity took in $39m worldwide in it's entire run)

The Avengers was seriously lacking in shirtless men. It's a problem. I mean, we only got a few seconds of shirtless Thor in his movie, and while we got a little more shirtless Captain America in his movie more of it was pre-change than post-change. There was only a tiny bit of shirtless Ironman, and all of that focused on his mini arc reactor, but everything he said was hilarious so he can be forgiven that grievous fault.

I was going to say we'll trade all 5 Male Avengers for 1 Scarlett shirtless scene.

Xyphos - 40 Swordmaster (retired)

This sounds like my house.

Let the guy with 25 years of marriage teach you oh young one. Everything has a price. Chick flick with wife = one action movie. I buy new computer, she gets granite countertops... A night at theatre = some got wings at hooters..

Ok so you might ask how does a 1k PC equate to 5k of countertops. In wife math she always wins....

No, you see, 300 went too far in the opposite direction. There were so many shirtless men that they ceased to be shirtless men and started being background. Pieces of furniture, if you will - and not even particularly sexy piece of furniture

Captain America, on the other hand, is not a piece of furniture.

Not a piece of furniture at all...
