Is this map supposed to be serious or kind of a joke?
Their is no way any of that is accurate for the West Coast and North East. Shit, I doubt 2 people in the North East could even name a college football program let alone be a fan of one. College Football is extremely unpopular up here.

It only shows the ranked teams so its very biased and doesn't represent reality in terms of dominate fan bases.

The northeast has plenty of transplants who like college football. A lack of local interest explains why the teams from far away are so popular - and why I can watch longhorn games with 100+ fans in several different bars in a city 1700 miles away.

I can tell you there are many more Virginia Tech fans in VA than any of the colors shown or WVU fans in West Virginia who have not other real football team to cheer for in their state. It is clearly a "top 25 fans only" list. Having 10 fans in your town of 100,000 fan of some unranked team, doesn't equal being the dominate fanbase in a region.

Remember, it's facebook, so your fanbase has to have a job and own a computer, or have access to someone elses... or know where a library is, so that rules out quite a few schools fanbases...

Certainly rules out WVU alum. I remember when they joined the Big 12 (or the big 12-4+2 as it should now be known) last year and our first game against them they had those typical school commercials. Theirs was their davy crockett raccoon hat mascot running through the woods with a musket. Perhaps true to their roots but a bit of a confusing way to advertise your institution of higher learning.

The only relevant teams currently are SEC teams because have beaten everyone. At least we've got balls to go against the best instead of Dallas Women's College or something. Texas hasn't been relevant for a while... and last time you played my irrelevant team, you lost.

Although I'm less worried this year, a couple people on our team learned to tackle!

One of the best schools to learn about mining. Also one of the best schools about setting couches on fire. Their state bird is their middle finger. Not kidding, the kids print up shirts for games. If you go to Morganhole, win or lose, you'll come out scared perhaps literally.

LOLz, poor Oregon State. According to the map, their fans don't even exist. To top it off, they lost their opener to Eastern Washington.

To which I say, see? There aren't even have enough fans, or detractors for that matter, to even begin to appreciate how sad a world this is for Oregon State right now.
As far as paying college football players go, I say hell yeah. Most won't make it to the pros to make the big dollars, but every last one of them who steps onto the field risks an injury that might make them an invalid for the rest of their lives, or worse. Poindexter with the Summa Cum Lauda from College Prep School for the Super Nerdy can get a full ride to Harvard but will never have to worry about having to give blood for the privilage, or ever experience 2 a days in 90 degree 90% humidity wearing 20 pounds of padding, right before Econ.
If you're not going to pay them outright, at least go easy on the rules against alumni paying for hookers and blow.

Texas was about as good then as it is now in my opinion. Nebraska, Colorado, Kansas, Kansas State (all Big 8 schools), Texas, Texas AM (SWC schools) where all top 15 at the end of 1995 (before the Big 12 started in 1996). Since then the only school to consistently stay "relevant", to use your word, as been Texas. The difference now is your competition has gotten weaker and now Oklahoma is just about it. Now its all about the ESPN SEC.

I suppose "dominate" is relative.
Womens field hockey probably has more fans in New York than Texas Football. A few hundred people out of 14 million is not what I would call dominate.

The point was about college football fans and what teams they pick, not in relation to other sports. You are right the northeast does not care about college football like other sports, but thats not what the poll is.
NYC certainly doesn't fall under that though, there are a huge number of college fans in this city. But it's new york, there are a huge number of fans for pretty much any sporting league/team in the world here. Hell, my second division german soccer team has a fan club with several hundred members.

I don't dislike Texas. What I dislike is how Texas, Alabama, Florida, etc is used as a marketing tool to sell products. F the actual sports, its about capitalism baby. Haha... I can blaspheme because I lived in Swampland for 3 years and even saw Swamp Jesus himself. Good kid but not NFL QB material. He would have made a good TE though.
What killed me as a VT fan at the time was I'd have to hear about how great he was all the time. We had our own good QB in Tyrod Taylor who was just as charitable, athletic, smart and all around good kid but he didn't wear religion on his sleeve. I used to point this out to people in FL and they'd be dismissive about it. Some of it was because Tyrod wasn't white but most of it was pure ignorance. Then I'd point out that Urban Meyer heavily recruited Tyrod and you'd see shock on there faces. Not only that, some of the other stars on that team, Percy Harvin, were VA kids that VT was trying to recruit as well. That's when I realized that most FL fans were morons.

Which can easily be done. Look, OU is horrid as well. That game last night against WVU looked almost like a high school game with 8+ turnovers I think. Texas could easily win the Big 12 but what does that mean? They are a top 25 team in my opinion but not top 10 as the ESPN talking heads would have said pre season. They could easily win the Big 12, have a 10+ win season then hope to get a non-SEC team in a bowl, win, and then Mack Brown would be safe for another year or two.
Honestly, its not Mack Brown but the players and how they execute. It is no different than a lot of other schools out there in college sports. The Hokies are the same way. Fans have unrealistic expectations almost every year. I'm sort of happy we are rebuilding (although I think we'll be in the ACC champ game) because it gets rid of the bandwagon fans.

No poll in the nation had us in the top 10 at the beginning of the year. At best we were 13-15.

When you have your pick of the best recruits in the entire country and you can't even teach them to tackle, it is a problem with coaching. There is no excuse to have the recruiting power of Texas and not to do well every year. You can't expect a NC every year, but giving up 550 yards rushing to a bunch of Mormons is unforgivable.
Bandwagon fans are a fact of life, they will go away until you are good again.

OSU and Baylor aren't top 10 teams. Texas was ranked just about right. They *should* win the conference. However, you are right about recruiting though I think recruit rankings etc are a bit subjective. Florida has consistently had top 5 recruiting but lose a game or two as well. It happens.
