So I used to work with a 50 year old guy who was the most stereotypical nerd you can imagine. never been married, living by himself, and he collects all old Star Trek paraphenilia and dresses like Spock every Halloween.

He posted this comment on the NY Times review, I had a good laugh:

I am a fanatical Star Trek (the original series) fan. And I take it seriously.
Firstly, for me, no other actors can play or repeat the chemistry that the original actors created between the characters. It's like re-making the "Honeymooners" without Jackie Gleason and Art Carney, or recasting "All in the Family," etc. Christopher Reeve IS Superman!

The movie "violates" many precedents set in the 1960's TV show. In a 1967 episode Kirk gets in a car and can't even drive it, yet the movie shows a young boy Kirk driving a 1960's Chevy Corvette. Who, in the year 2265, will even know how to maintain a car.

Also established is that Mr. Spock served on the Enterprise for almost 12 years before Kirk took command. Kirk was 34 years old at that time. That makes Spock at least 12 years older and thus they couldn't have met in Star Fleet Academy, as depicted in the new film.

Paramount has already raped Star Trek too many times. I for one, will not be seeing the new film(s) ever.

As one commenter stated, can't Hollywood create anything new. Must they always try and re-make TV shows and re-make old movies. For the money the writers and producers get paid, they should come up with their own new characters and story lines.

Man this statement is so true. Doesn't seem to be allot of fresh idea's coming out of Hollywood these days.

However for the rest of the post, I don't really agree. I for one really liked all the Star Trek movies and TV shows. I also liked the last superman movie allot better then the first one with Reeve.

I make fun of my sister who refuses to watch the LOTR movies. I know she would love them, but she absolutely will not watch them.

I had to drag my wife kicking and screaming to see Iron Man and she loved it. She loved Watchmen too, which I couldnt believe. She's restoring the small amount of faith I have in the opposite sex.

My Gen X childhood is currently being mined like no tomorrow tho. Between Transformers, G.I. Joe...they are developing a Robotech movie. It does seem there has been absolutely ZERO new franchises from new material. What would be the last one...The Matrix?

They remake old franchises into new movies for the same reason you get so many absolute shit video games out of movie franchises.

If you want to make a new movie or game with no past connections, it has to be GOOD. Nobody will give you money if it's crap.

But if you link it to a franchise, it will make money even if it's crap, and crap is easy to make, so franchised crap is an obvious way to go.


And of course, if it's good AND it's got a link to a franchise, you'll make a billion dollars, like Lord of the Rings.

Saw it today. Really liked it. I thought the characterizations were well done. Deforest Kelly was channeling through Karl Urban from beyond the grave. I thought the Kirk characterization was ok, but probably the weakest of the three mains. He was too much of a pretty boy.

I'm definitely looking forward to more. It would be interesting if theyworked out a way to go from the big screen back to T.V.

And sorry, but the movie definitely was not made for the Fred M's of the world, with all due respect. I'm ok with that.

Great movie. They did mess with a bit of the "lore" but it was sort of explained and came through on lots of extra little details to make me think even most trekkies would come away happy. Definitely leaves room for new movies.
